Good day.
Fast Trackers 7199

For some reason, when I copy and paste from Word, I lose all formatting.

Worse, the links I embedded will not open a new tab or page.

This is a recent development. The problem did not exist a month ago.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It is likely an issue with the editor plug-in we use, which I have no control over:
dev.ckeditor.com/query?group=status&milestone=CKEditor+4.5.2

Pasting from Word has always been a sometimes unreliable feature. You only need to look at their bug tracking db to see that: dev.ckeditor.com/query?status=assigned&s...rsion&order=priority

I downloaded and installed the 4.5.0/4.5.1 editor update a couple of weeks ago. The developer is planning to release a bug fix version at the end of the month. There is a lot going on with paste from Word on their end... they know the functionality is unreliable, but the issue is not entirely their fault, either.

Thank you, Steve. Is there something I can do to create a link that will open a new page? I post five links a week and hate to keep sending everyone away from our site.

You can use the link tool in the editor for that--look for the chain link icon. No need to use paste from Word for that.

Don't get me wrong... the editor developer will probably fix the paste from Word functionality in their next update. However, it is functionality that seems to regularly get broken and fixed in their updates.

Thanks, Steve. That is what I have been doing, but it does not open an additional page. Clicking on the link means the reader leaves this and opens the link. I am trying to avoid people leaving FTHT. I just want them to open another page without closing this one.

If you're using the link tool in the FTH editor, select the second tab, labelled "Target" and choose "New Window (_blank)". That forces the link to open a new browser window.

I will post a related follow-up on a subtle, undocumented aspect of custom menu links. (I think it is relevant.)

If you create a stand-alone custom menu link (*not* in a custom page), the code tries to figure out whether the link references a page on your website or not, since you do not have the option of setting the target for those links. If the code thinks the link refers to a page in your website, it will *not* make the target _blank. If it refers to a page outside of your website, it will make that target _blank.

Note that this is *only* for the case of creating a custom link on the menu, not a link embedded inside a custom page. It is done this way so that people who want to move the default pages to a different spot on the menu can still have the appearance of them loading quickly from the same website.

A follow-up on broken Paste From Word functionality in the editor. It looks like the developer of the 3rd party editor we use was trying a new approach for copy and paste involved putting more trust in the different browsers for that functionality as opposed to just doing their own copy and paste functionality. It looks like they have had too many bugs with the new approach and are partially giving up on it.: dev.ckeditor.com/ticket/13528
