When I login to our toastmaster club FTH2 website, when using my iMac and the Safari web browser, I type in my email, wait for my user name to appear, click on my username, then I usually press the ENTER key -- and the login hangs. I have to kill the window and start over.

I then repeat the procedure, and remember to click on the "authenticate/login" button, and the login completes.

What is most annoying about this is that from time to time I have occasion to login to our club website using a Windows computer and the Internet Explorer web browser. I enter my email, wait for my user name to appear, click the user name, type in the password, and press the ENTER key and the member login completes.

Why is it that the member login process accepts a press of the ENTER key from the Windows Internet Explorer web browser, but not the Apple Safari web browser?

I will let Brian or Steve answer this question, but it could be because of the format that they used to create it....

Browsers work differently and do not all support the same functionality.

You should not expect everything to work exactly the same on every browser. I do my best to achieve that, but the reality is that not all functionality works exactly the same on every browser.

If you would like, there is another place on here where others can evaluate your website if you would like... This helps all of us improve in advertising our clubs and websites.

This does not mean I presume there is no issue... we will need to investigate. Unfortunately, I do not use safari and your iMac, so someone that does will have to check.

Thanks, Linda -- our club just uses the basic FTH website. Ours is a corporate club and our members are focused on their work and family. Our club website is a useful way to communicate our agendas to our members, and to have our members sign up for roles at future meetings. None of us has much time to tinker with beefing up our club website, and we are generally content with the way it is.

Small annoyances, such as not being able to press ENTER to complete a member login when using the Safari web browser, and just that -- small annoyances, and there are versions of Java and PHP and other web programming tools that can accommodate a key press in place of a click, and can generate platform-neutral code that behaves mostly the same regardless of the web browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, Opera, or others). With the ever-increasing popularity of the Mac platform it would seem useful for your web developers to acquire a Linux computer, an Apple Mac, an Android tablet, and an IOS tablet, just to make sure the FTH web pages are as compatible as possible across all platforms.

As an experiment, I just launched the Firefox for Mac web browser, and opened our club website. The member login went smoothly: click member login; type e-mail and wait for member name to appear; click member name; type password; press the ENTER key, and the login completed. So I have to wonder why it can't go the same way with the Safari web browser.

I do most of my toastmasters-related internet work on my iPhone, and get to my Mac for things such as generating a series of club agendas for the next few months, which is easier on the Mac than on my iPhone or iPad.

FTH is a wonderful utility for toastmasters clubs. We really appreciate all the work that has been devoted to FTH for the benefit of toastmasters clubs world-wide.

I do not think you understand... We have zero budget, we are not funded by TM International, we work independently, all labor is volunteer labor by toastmasters like you. I am the current developer of the system... I do not work in IT and I do the system updates in my spare time.

Wow -- Steve, you do a fabulous job. I had no idea that FTH was not funded and that everything we see is a volunteer effort.

Let me know if there is some way I can help test things on the Mac Safari web browser.

I'll send you my e-mail in a private message.

Yeah, even the server cost is donated by a DTM who was the original creator of the system.

Thanks for the testing offer... I will keep that in mind.

Steve,

I am a mac user and have the same issue. In the scheme of things, this isn't a big issue. On my Macbook, I use Chrome and Firefox, both of which allow me to tab from the username field, type in my password, and press enter/return to log in. As much of a mac geek as I am, I am likely to blame this on the Safari browser.

And, just for the sake of completeness, we do have a Linux user who does a certain amount of testing. That's me. I use Firefox and Seamonkey (another Gecko browser) and sometimes Chromium and the occasional Webkit browser.

If you count my beat-up old Android phone, I suppose you could say that I do Android testing as well.
