Hi,

We have two registered Toastmaster Gavel Clubs in the North Atlanta area who need a website to help with the management of their clubs. Can we setup a FTH website for them? What are the requirements?

Please let me know. Thanks so much!

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your response. I am the Youth Leadership Director for District 44 in the State of Georgia, USA, for 2016-2017. I would truly appreciate a bit more information about why gavel clubs are ineligible for an FTH account and website.

I can understand reluctance to provide websites for Youth Leadership programs. However, the Gavel Club is a chartered Toastmasters Club. In fact, the Golden Speakers Gavel club, in Alpharetta, GA, has a Toastmasters International Charter number - 5442819. Gavel club members receive a new member kit with CC and CL manuals and complete the 10 projects in each manual, just as a new Toastmaster club member would do. When the member reaches 18, the speeches that have been completed are recognized by Toastmasters International.

Our Youth are the future leaders of tomorrow. These students want to improve their communication and leadership skills. It seems to me that we need to provide support for their efforts in every way possible.

The FTH website which we use for our Toastmasters club (The Navigators) is wonderful! It would really help the gavaliers to have a FTH website so that they too can develop agendas and do scheduling.

Can you help me better understand the reasoning for the decision not to support gavel clubs? I would truly appreciate a call or email.

Thanks so much!

Barbara Wallace,
District 44 Youth Leadership Director

You will need to talk to Brian McDonald about the "why".

From a technical standpoint, I can tell you that the system design does not support Gavel clubs since I believe that the club numbering is a separate system.

We are an independent volunteer group of Toastmasters... we do not work for TI. We have to focus our limited time, energy, and resources where it returns the greatest benefit.

Thanks so much for the response, Steve. I did not realize that the numbering system is separate. I can definitely agree that support would be challenging.

FTH is so useful to our club! I am just wondering what we might be able to do for these wonderful young adults to help them with the agendas and scheduling from a website. Do you have any suggestions?

Also, can you help me get in touch with Brian McDonald? Is he part of TI or of FTH?

Thanks!!!

He will probably chime in here when he sees this thread. He is a very busy guy these days... he is a District Director for his district this year.

Gavel clubs open a hole field of privacy concerns because of who the audience for the gavel clubs is.

1) For people under 18 we would need to have and store letters from the guardians that having these minors on our sites and having their pictures and contact information was ok. We are just not setup for this level legal protection and of security for the protection of minors.

2) Gavel clubs have been set up for people in prison, we could not publicly announce their contact information.

3) Gavel clubs have been set up for individuals who cannot for one reason or another do not fit into the regular Toastmasters Chartered clubs, in most cases these individuals do not have contact information.

FTH is not part of TI we are just a bunch of Toastmasters who volunteer our time and resources to helping Chartered Toastmasters Clubs and Districts.

Thank you,
