Some of our club members have been receiving blank messages from "This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it." recently. These are coming in multiple waves (mine went directly to Spam, thanks to Gmail), and appear to be repeated, automated messages. Should we be concerned? Is there anything we can do to stop this?

Thanks!

Sorry, all deleted. They all have nothing in the subject line and "undefined" as the only text in the body. If i get another, i'll post the header. :-(

Only happening in my Early Risers club, apparently. And apparently not to all club members. Any suggestions until we can get access to one of the email headers?

You cannot expect me just to give you guesses. Unless you provide me with the information I need to assess the problem, I am afraid there is not much I can do for you.

Sorry. I know it must be frustrating to deal with end users who don't really know how the system works. I wasn't sure how much you could tell from what i wrote, based on your responses that it's "probably a bug." (I'm afraid i don't know what that really means.) I will wait to see if i can grab one of the email headers and post it.

Thanks for all the hard work you put in to make these club sites run so well for us.

Please do not misunderstand... I *do* want to help. However, in any given scenario where something with FreeToastHost is not working, frequently there could be ten different reasons, a few of which may be due to system malfunctions ("bugs") and some may be due to user errors and some may be a combination of causes. If there was an obvious cause, I would immediately advise you of a workaround (if one is available) and set about correcting any system malfunctions (if I find one).

In this case, I think there may be a system malfunction because the "undefined" (that you mentioned) is a programming term used in the internals of the system... you should not be seeing that unless there is some sort of system malfunction or something unusual happening with the system. Sometimes the "something unusual" can also be caused by users trying to do something unusual or unexpected, but that is not immediately obvious either in this case.

Email is particularly tricky to figure out causes for problems. Frequently, users delete problem emails (like you did) or your email program alters them into some form that prevents me from seeing the details of the problem. We do have email logs, but the email logs do not keep what is in the body of the email, which is where the problem is in this case.

So... any details you can provide will increase my odds of resolving the issue. More details are better. The email headers are usually the best source of info for email.

Please tell me what type of email was intended to be sent when you got the blanks... An agenda email? An email from someone's email software to all the members? What type of email were you/your members trying to do when you got the blanks?

Ok, thanks, everyone. I do want to get this resolved, but it may take a bit to get the cause sorted out. Please bear with me. :unsure:

The best thing to do now is to post the original unfiltered emails showing the headers here using the code icon above, so I can take a look for things in common. (The icon showing a document with the angle brackets <> on it.) The code icon will preserve all the content in what you post and will not treat it as formatting for the forum thread.
If you post the email this way, it will end up in a box like this. Don't worry about it being too long, this box will show scroll bars if needed.

Morning Steve, Here is more information . One of my members sent out an email using the incorrect address to email the whole club. We rent our website from a provider. She sent this email out the day before ...the blank emails came back to me. our email address email ends with '@confidentcommunicatorsclub.com'
Let me know if you need anything else.
Thank you Steve!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, Anita. Something went wrong. Perhaps the address is not correct? Can you find out?
I sent the note to the club in the meantime, as I have a spreadsheet. Just wanted to make sure I had the correct eMail Address for our club.
We need to see the full email with headers to determine where it originally came from and how it was sent to you.
Thank you,
I am not sure that the original sender would necessarily be there. If the email was originally sent to a FTH list / officer email, then the resultant end recipient email would appear to come from the server (since it is the list server / relay), with only the Reply-To to provide a clue as to the original sender. I do not see the Reply-To in the above, so cannot comment on that further. I have thought about putting the original sender in a custom email header, but unfortunately, many of those custom headers get lost/dropped in transit by email agents/webmail, so even that is not very reliable.
In my view, one of two things likely occurred here. Either this was sent to a FTH list / officer email or this was the result of a bounce message from some end recipient in a list. (probably the latter) There are email loop detection measures in place in the FTH list server, but nothing is perfect when it comes to email, and it could take as many as 1 1/2 round trips for the loop to be detected if the bounce originated on the recipients end (since they would not put any of our loop detection headers in the email). I suspect that there is a a bogus / bad recipient email address somewhere in the mix that would cause a bounce back... because we do not track bounces from a recipient email address and invalidate them after a threshold number of bounces, this is a potential area of vulnerability for the system if it ends up playing "email ping pong" with a bounce message. (although the loop detection should intervene after a couple of round trips)
I did add empty subject / empty body detection and failures to the list server, so it these emails had either that would explain why malikmlwilliams has not seen any issues since. Again, since we do not see any Subject and/or body information in what malikmlwilliams has provided, it is hard to know if that is relevant or not.
Thanks, Steve. The text i posted above was indeed the full text of the header and email. (I noted in my original post that the emails we received were blank.) No one in my club has mentioned receiving any more of these in weeks, so it looks like your fix worked. As you say, "fingers crossed!"
Thanks again.
