I think I already know the answer to my question based on your reply, Steve the Techie, to marc33, but I'm going to ask anyway just in case I'm wrong.
 In the "Send Basic Email" editor, the {{firstname}} variable is not listed under the editor: Does that mean that the {{firstname}} variable will not work in "Send Basic Email" editor? {{firstname}} is defined in the code... it should work.  Also, it is listed under the editor, if you click the More link.

Thank you, both. I'm grateful for your help. Curiously, the "more" link does not appear for me (screenshot attached).
