This is Hal Huntley -- a member of club 1435 -- SRI Organon Toastmasters.

I am trying to create a custom group that will include all the current members of the club plus selected past members who have said that they want to receive emails about the club. I created a custom group name with the "Select the contact list containing the people to make the group from..." set to "members". But then I want to do a "quick add" or some other method of adding the other email addresses who wish to get the club messages. It appears that I am not allowed to add more names to that group list.

I see that I'm not allowed to add 'This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.' as a member of the special group name. I cannot add an email address of a club member in the list of past members. Is there a way to have a list of both 'Members' and 'Former members' or 'Club friends/affiliates'?

Regards,
Hal Huntley (email dude for our club)

No you cannot mix types in a custom group.

I thought about that long and hard when I designed the feature, but the short answer is that non-member groups always require unsubscribe links in the emails and the people who can send to them are restricted to officers. It just would make too complicated to allow members and non-members in the same custom group.

I may change be persuaded differently in the future, but I would have to work out how to handle the differences between unsubscribe link requirements and sending restrictions before I would ever allow members and non-members in the same custom group.

The lists are working as they are supposed to. To be a member of a custom list yoneed to be a member.

There are already lists for guests, and former members.

Thank you for the reply. I realize that the lists are working as they are supposed to.

I just wish they worked a bit differently and wonder if there is a way with the current set up to allow a list with a special name to go to members and specified others who are not now members. According to Steve's reply, it appears that is not the case right now. I am thinking about Steve's comments and will comment on those soon.

Regards,
Hal
