When typing "Redlands Toastmasters Club" (or selecting that from the auto prompt), our club shows up with a main heading and two sub-headings (see attachment). The main heading belongs to our club, but the two sub-headings belong to and link to a neighbouring club (South Redlands Toastmasters Club). One of the links is to their main page. I am not sure if one of us has the wrong web page description or keywords, or is it just because of the similarity between the names? Can anyone help or advise us on how to rectify this issue?

Strangely, if you only type in or select "Redlands Toastmasters" (without the "Club"), the two links show up correctly (one below the other), with no sub-headings.

These are called sitelinks and are an automated Google indexing feature.

1: The main search result
2: Sitelinks

I notice SRTC has a page with links to area clubs including yours. Seems the googlebot just got a bit confused. No coffee that morning is my guess.

This article details how to request sitelink edits using Google webmaster tools:

Pam,

You should also add key words to every custom page. This will maximize your presence on the Google search. Look at the articles in this link: support.toastmastersclubs.org/search-engine-optimization

Thanks Roger and Brad
I have requested the demotion of the links - will wait to see what happens.
Do keywords on private pages have any significance? Surely they shouldn't register on a Google search.

The googlebot cannot see private pages.

Adding keywords on your public pages will help you rank higher when users perform related searches. Use caution though. Only add keywords and keyword phrases in 'natural language'. If you use too many/too frequent google thinks you are keyword spamming and will lower your rank.

So just keep it to natural language just as if you were talking to someone.
