How to load members who share an email address 10 years 11 months ago #25498

I need to load two members who share an email address, but get a "duplicate" error message when I try to register the email address against both of them. For the moment, I have loaded the email address against only one of them, but this obviously means that one of them is missing out on their website invitation. Is there any way to work around this?

There's no workaround for people with shared email addresses.

I had that situation in a club whose website I used to administer. I just assumed that any emails that got sent out to the mailing list would be seen by both parties to that email address.

The only other option is to encourage one of them to get a separate address. Some ISPs (e.g. Xtra) offer sub-accounts and of course there's gmail. Bear in mind that Toastmasters International also requires individual email addresses.

I agree with everything Jane wrote, particularly about encouraging one of them to get a separate address.

However, if they absolutely do not want to get a second email address, the other option would be to add one of them without an email address, and hope that the one that the email address is tied to shares any emails with the other person. Brian notes in the following thread how to add a person without an email address: support.toastmastersclubs.org/4-general-...-email-address#20495
With this approach, you could add both members right away, and update the email address later for the one you added without one.

If they are using Gmail there is a sub-addressing workaround.

Append "+" to your username and then add some text to create a distinct address. Mail still goes to the main account.

For the email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. there could be distinct addresses such as
flowerpower+ricky@gmail.com
flowerpower+lucy@gmail.com

Same thing to use periods which Gmail ignores. So This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. is the same as This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. However this every so subtle difference could cause confusion.

If they are on another mail service besides Gmail there may be similar workarounds.

In outlook.com (previously hotmail), you can create up to 10 aliases that will link to the main account.
