I have had these two new email security features implemented in development code for over six months--its probably high time to release them and let you all get some benefit from them. :) These are found in the Email Security tab of the Email and Contact Forms module... scroll this post down to take a look at what the settings look like.

1. The first new feature allows you to elect to have your club/district's emails checked against the black lists of all clubs and districts using FreeToastHost. Essentially, this is my attempt at a crowd-sourced approach to email security. I am referring to this crowd-sourced black list as the "System Black List"... (I was not sure what to call it.) B)

If you elect to use this "System Black List" feature, you should keep in mind that you are essentially putting faith in all other clubs and districts using FreeToastHost to not black list some email address that you need... For example, if you get emails via FreeToastHost email addresses from social media websites, Paypal, domain name registrars, etc., you may want to avoid using this since those are more likely to get black listed by other clubs and districts using FreeToastHost. Also, if you use one of those services for your club/district, you may want to verify that you can get emails from them once you enable this feature... a simple approach to doing that is to just make a change to your profile for those services... most will send out a verification email when you do that, ... so you can confirm you are still getting emails from them via that method.

You can also get a sense of what email addresses would be included in the System Black List by clicking the button for that in the dialog. Note that we are showing domains for complete email addresses in this list, but obscuring the part before the @ symbol for privacy in case someone erroneously was added to some club / district black list.

Note that if you use this feature, it will very likely slow down processing of your emails through FreeToastHost.

Lastly, using this does not mean that you can just ignore adding spam email addresses to your own black list. If you are getting spammed while using the System Black List, then you still must add the email address to your black list. When you do that, all *other* clubs using the System Black List feature will benefit from your addition.

2. The second new feature, "Is this SPAM?" Links, is a convenience feature for email security and is in recognition that it is not always obvious what a spammer's email address is when it is coming through FreeToastHost email, since all of those emails are routed from the server email address. If you enable "Is this SPAM?" links, a simple link is added to emails to *publicly accessible* email addresses (officer aliases, admin address, or the contact email address if enabled)... if the received email is spam, you can simply click the link and the email sender will be added to the email black list. A message is also generated to the website admin to allow them to review the added address in case of errant clicks. ;)

I have renamed what was called the "System Blacklist" feature to the "Crowd-Sourced Blacklist" feature. Same feature, different name. I am renaming it because I want it to be very clear what this feature does ... The black list is created from all the individual club/district black lists by the code and we do not have any control over it.
