I have been having similar challenges. I just figured out that the "agenda bar" is that set of blue boxes. (a screen shot in the referenced linked doc would have been helpful to figure this out sooner). So I am finally making some forward progress with my first agenda.
Here's MY question - Why don't these buttons have labels? I only see what each button is for if I hover my cursor over it. I am using IE11 (no options to use anything else...).
