Hello Admins,

I was just at a Toastmasters workshop yesterday, and somebody asked if there was an easy way (i.e. an app) to edit the agenda for a meeting on his phone. The answer was no, but when I heard that FreeToastHost was run by a group of volunteers, I got to thinking: why not make one?

I'm a software engineer with some mobile experience, and I'd be more than happy to be the primary dev of a mobile TM app. I'd just need an API for accessing the FreeToastHost data and I could essentially do the rest myself.

The initial features would be:
  • View the agenda (edit if TM)
  • View membership directory
  • Edit profile

There could also be a built-in timer component, but maybe too much automation would detract from the learning experience of being Timer. Just an idea.

Let me know if this is at all interesting, and feel free to PM me. I live in Hawaii but will be traveling to the East and West Coasts (USA) in late February/early March, if anyone would like a meet-up.

Kyle

At this time there is no external interface to the FTH application.

I would be willing to develop an API for FTH. I would just need a copy of the source.

Sorry we do not provide the source.

Your application would have to interface with the existing front end at this time.

I like this idea and think that it should strongly be reconsidered. Opening up access to the data would be helpful for so many of us.

I was going to tentatively make a similar offer when I came across this thread, and saw Kyle's offer (and the response to it). Would one be allowed to build an app based on screen scrapes of the underlying website? Not very exciting, but if that's all that's currently permitted...

I think that lobbying for an API might be the best route. I'd prefer to see a 2-way (i.e. allow submitting data as well as retrieving it) A one-way (retrieve data that is already displayed on web pages) is a fairly easy task to accomplish and would ge a good start, at least for what I need now). In the meantime, scrren scraping is the only option.

i have been working several days on a screen scrape of the info on the Agenda page.using a chrome extension, with some success. The way the page is formatted is somewhat of a problem and requires a number of REGEX expressions to parse out the info that I need. Once I have finished with my project, I will post a link to the details in case anyone else might find it useful.

James, I wouldn't mind having a look at what you come up with.

Brian, would it be possible to clarify the reasoning behind keeping a tight lid on this kind of development? I can imagine many excellent reasons, but a brief explanation might still the clamour from us keeners. Of course, it probably won't :-/
