At our club website ( 4640768 / oracleatl.toastmastersclubs.org/ ) we had a timing issue show up yesterday:

Both Wilfred and Pam logged in with a couple minutes of each other. Only after both logged in did the following happen:

They both noticed that Eval #1 and Joke Master roles were open.

4:35 Wilfred signed up for Eval #1
4:35 Wilfred confirmed Eval #1
4:36 Pam signed up for Eval #1
4:36 Pam confirmed Eval #1
4:36 Wilfred signed up for Joke Master
4:36 Wilfred confirmed Joke Master
4:36 Pam signed up for Presiding Officer
4:36 Pam confirmed Pres Officer
4:42 Pam signed up for Joke Master
4:42 Pam confirmed Joke Master

So in the end, Pam's roles "stuck" and Wilfred's were overwritten. I'm guessing this is quite uncommon but may have happened before. I scanned the forums briefly for anyone else reporting this but didn't see it at first glance.

Suggestion is to disallow someone from signing up for a role, if someone else has already claimed a role, even though the page wasn't updated with the first sign-up.

Cheers,
Bernard Assaf, website admin, Oracle Atlanta Toastmasters

You are correct that it is a timing issue. But it is a bit complicated for a number of reasons.

I can send timestamps of agenda rows to the browser on page refreshes and data updates so that they can be sent back on saves for comparison, but the thorny question is what to do if a clash is discovered.

If you consider that this can also happen in the agenda editor, it gets even more complex since data for multiple updated rows can be sent to the server. There could be a case where some rows were updated and do not clash, but some do. So do I block the save or do I do a partial save? :?

Don't get me wrong. This is something I have been aware of for a while (also see support.toastmastersclubs.org/2011-10-23...-edit-meeting-agenda) and would like to resolve, but most of the solutions are messy and convoluted. For example, I could do a sort of "check-out/check-in" kind of thing to ensure that only one person is editing data at one time, but then I have to contend with the scenario where data is never checked back in. (It would happen)

Agreed it is a messy technical issue. Glad you are already aware of it. Since our club's inception in April 2015 we hadn't had this issue (that I know of) so it isn't something that happens often!
