Transfer DNS records to a new Service Provider 11 years 10 months ago #21197

Hi there,

I need to do a DNS zone transfer of our club's external website from the Free Toast Host name servers NS1.FREETOASTHOST.US and NS2.FREETOASTHOST.US to our new DNS service provider. When I try to initiate an AXFR zone transfer from my new service provider, I get an error saying permission is denied.

From what I've read in this support forum, Free Toast Host used to provide DNS services back in the 1.0 days. Now that FTH has upgraded to version 2.0, those services are no longer provided, and we no longer have access to them.

Is there someone at FTH who still has access to the old name servers?

Thanks in advance!

Sarah

1) FTH2 does not provide name servers you need to use the name server from your registrar.

2) please refer to these FAQ to setup your domain

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the quick response. I had previously read through and tried the HowTo articles you posted, but they don't seem to help, because the old FTH 1.0 nameservers do not permit my DNS service provider's name servers to do the AXFR. If you do a DNS whois on scrantontoastmasters.org, you'll see that our DNS records are still managed by the FTH.

Do you have access to the old name servers?

Sarah, the FTH 1.0 nameservers have disappeared. You would have to use your own ISP's nameservers to point to the FTH 2.0 IP address.

I'm assuming that this means editing the DNS records by hand. I'm no expert on this stuff, so it might pay to wait until someone else confirms this.

Hi Jane,

I discovered that I have to do a transfer of our domain registration before I can get a new DNS service provider to manage our DNS records and redirect scrantontoastmasters.org to the FTH 2.0 IP address. Tucows currently manages our registration, which is why it shows up in the DNS whois lookup.

Well, I guess we can consider this case closed until I've done a little more legwork. I really appreciate your help with this.

Cheers!
Sarah
