Dear support or Brian ;)

I have been asked if it is possible to assign each member their own private password with the obligatory password reset function?

At present our site uses a singular password for all users. :silly:

Or is this a kiss feature? B)

kind regards, :)

Darren.

Please put your club number in either each post or in your forum signature (see mine for how).

Re: the password.... What are you talking about? Each member gets their own member password already.
However, that does not get them access to the Admin Console, only the admin password does.

There is only one Admin password for each club. Are you sharing the Admin password with every member of your club? Very bad idea if you are.

i couldn't agree more.

i have inherited the admin role and can't for the life of me understand why but yes, there is one password for the entire website which means even the mail room attendant has the keys to the president's filing cabinet - so to speak. the same password is used for members and officers and admin console and so on etc. (hence the reason for this post)

we can point the finger of blame later, for now all i need to know is how to implement the required changes to separate member and admin log-in, please. if you are able to assist me.

regards,

Darren.

The admin can request a new password at any time. Log out, go to login again and click the "forget your password" link. It sends a email to the registered admin.

Obviously, that email address needs to be the one you want it to be. Make sure it's correct before you reset the password.

Once the password is reset, no one else can get in (unless you share the password, of course).

They will need to login as members and set their own individual passwords.

thank you Jane,

that has made the admin password different from the members' password.

however, under the Members Only area in the Edit Your Profile preference there is no option to create or change a member's personal login password and consequently anyone can still log in as anyone else using their respective email address.

Are you able to point me in towards the area to do this, please?

regards,

Darren.

Darren,

"keys to the president's file cabinet"... I will have to remember that phrase. ;)

Anyway, change can be painful for groups... some will not want the change. You will need to help ease them into it.

Some suggestions:

1. Give everyone fair warning that the single password will be going away. You can also change the password from inside the Admin Console. (simplest approach in my opinion) You should give the password to one other person, maybe the club president or whatever. That way it will not look so much like you are doing this unilaterally. (It is not your "power trip".)

2. You want to make this as easy as possible for your members to log in as members. Feel free to steal the following page from my club's website: www.mindfulcommunicators.org/LoginHelp.html I am giving it to you... update it as you need to, and make sure you make it *public*. That way you will have a cheat page to point your members to when they tell you they cannot figure out or remember the member login process and therefore you should just give in and go back to the single password method.

3. I looked at your Member Management area. Your member names have tab characters in them which may mess things up. Please ditch the tab characters from the member names and replace with simple spaces.

4. Treat your existing members as new members, and send each one a Welcome email from the Membership Management page. Pay attention to what is in that email and update it to make sure that your members are given the right support information, including a link to the login info page mentioned above and a link to the online user docs. Make sure you give the link to the doc index page... Jane can provide the link. Put your email address in the Welcome email (use your admin email alias if you want), so that they can conveniently contact you with questions.

5. If people complain, mention that there are features that are probably not working as intended if they continue to log in with the admin password. For example, I have to think that the agenda role tracking cannot really work correctly, since it would never know who was logged in to track. It would always be the admin, unless you edit the agendas every time and manually set the people in the roles.

That should do it... People will gripe, be prepared for that.

You cannot do that for them. They each have to do that via the member login/authentication process.

That is why you need the login helper page I mentioned.

Before they do anything, fix the Membership management stuff like I mentioned above.

What they need to do:

1. Each must click on Member Login. Each must enter at least 4 characters of their first name or email. A pop up will display showing what the system has found as a match for what they entered. They should click on the correct name in the popup (usually just 1 there). They will see a number get entered in the member login... *ignore* the number... it is *not* their TM member id... it is an internal arbitrary number the system assigns to them.

2. On the first time, they will not enter a password. They will click authenticate. The system will find their email in the Membership Management info and send them an email with a link in it.

3. They click the link in the email and the link takes them back to your website where they get a popup asking them to set and confirm their member login password. Once set, they use that password each time moving forward for their member login.

It is done this way for security purposes. You as the admin do not know the member passwords, but you do not need to either with this method.
