Hi,

Re. Club: 8872. We would like our website to be on the Free Toast Host (FTH) server - how is this best done?
Our current website toastmastershibiscuscoast.co.nz/ is on the FTH platform, but not on the FHT Server.

This has caused many problems for our club, and in order to make the website easily operated and easily supported by FTH help line in the future, we would like to have our website on the FTH server.

The question is - how is this best done?

Amanda,

Remove the DNS setting on the settings page and use the alias. Make sure someone changes the website listing at toastmasters international as well.

Thank you Roger and Jane,

Roger, is the club alias just hbct, as already appears in the website alias box, under website settings? Or do I have to add anything else?

And Jane, what will be my new website address?

The alias can be anything you wish but we generally recommend something short and simple so that it saves on typing for members.

Website address will be myalias.toastmastersclubs.org (replace "myalias" with your actual alias)

Alias cannot be used in email addresses, that is why some clubs prefer the domain names.
If you plan to keep your domain name, but just use the alias, then you can still use the email addresses you have been using. However, if you give up your domain name, you will need to get your people used to using the club number in the various club email addresses. e.g., members-#####@toastmastersclubs.org (replace ##### with club number)

Thank you Steve,

According to my president, as our email address: hicoast@toastmasters.org.nz is from District 72 it will not change even if I delete the domain name and use the alias. is this the case?

Ok, so apparently you are using a different email address than the forwarding email addresses that FTH provides.
My comments are in reference to the forwarding email addresses that are provided with your FTH website.

So... the answer to your question is that you should be able to still use that email address.

I have added an alias hbc.toastmastersclubs.org and deleted custom domain name, but despite saving and repeating, the details on the settings of the admin console revert. What next?

Try again click the save button.

I have added an alias hbc.toastmastersclubs.org

Don't include the .toastmastersclubs.org part for the alias in the Basic Settings tab... just enter the initial part, hbc, as the alias. (You do use all of it though for getting to your website with your browser.)

The code will check if the alias is already used by another club... be prepared for the possibility that it might be.

Thank you I have done as Steve suggested.

Now we have www.toastmastersclubs.org/welcome/ when I search for our site.

If our alias is not used by another club, will our hbc.toastmasersclubs.org site address take a while to link to our site?

Thank you all so much fom your patience and support in helping me try to achieve this for my club :)

hbc.toastmastersclubs.org/ and 8872.toastmastersclubs.org both connect.

In your post, you have a typo.

You need to change you website at Toastmasters International to hbc.toastmastersclubs.org and don't forget to change it on the NZ club list that Jan mentioned earlier.

If the system did *not* display an error message when you entered your alias, then you are good to go on that. (No one else had the alias.)It should have just said that it successfully saved your input.

What RogerM and Jane have pointed out are also *important*. Be aware it make take a bit for the search engines to loop back around and update their indexes with your new website address. (It is not instantaneous.)

For the information of the other Ambassadors:

All New Zealand clubs have an email address assigned by Toastmasters NZ, in the form xxxx@toastmasters.org.nz
Each July, and at other times when needed, the addresses to which the emails are forwarded are changed. These email addresses are listed on the TM NZ club finder.

For Amanda's info: The Toastmasters NZ addresses are completely separate from the FTH website (and any other website, for that matter).

Ok, so are those email addresses one per club?
Do those email addresses get forwarded to the membership of a club?

How does that work?

I am just curious as I am considering what email features to add to FTH.
Maybe there is something that I can add that will make FTH work better with the system in place there.

Steve:

Those email addresses get forwarded to three people. It's up to the club to decide which ones, but it's usually Pres, VP Ed and VP M.

There is no guarantee that those people will forward them to the rest of the club. And a common issue is that clubs forget to update them. As Area Gov, I prefer to make up my own officer lists and use those - more reliable.

CBD Toastmasters gets some of its inquiries from our Toastmasters NZ address and some from the contact form on the website.

I don't want to take this thread off track, but I am hoping that one or more of those email addresses could just be set to some FTH officer aliases or officer group email address. Granted, it would be double forwarding, but it would allow for both systems to work together and eliminate the need for updating the NZ provided addresses.

Since it sounds like the NZ email addresses are just forwarding addresses like FTH does, not sure that I could add anything to FTH to make them easier to integrate. Perhaps we can discuss in a different thread...

Can you advise how long it will be before we can link directly to our new address hbc.toastmastersclubs.org?
The new address is now listed at Toastmasters International, we have new passwords for the D72 directory, and I can see our new address sits on the D72 Directory.

However, when I Google hbc.toastmasters I get our old address, and when I click through I get Free Toast Host.

8872.toastmastersclubs.org does not have a site alias set you need to set one before you can link to it.

It may take a while for Google to catch up, but if you type in hbc.toastmastersclubs.org, it connects to your site.
