I’ve never used a custom group before and even after reading the documentation I’m still confused. We have started putting on events at a local library and gathering names/emails of guests. I’d like to create a custom group called Library. The only way to do this is to add names to one of the non-member groups then choose people from that list in the custom group tab. The first time I do this, I can erase any names in say the prospect list, then create the group Library from the prospect list by selecting Check All. The second time I do this, however, I have to add people to the prospect list then choose the new people to add to the Library group. How do I know which people are new? Do I simply select everyone agan? And what is Flip All? I would like to be able to add new people directly into the custom group, but there’s no way to do,that, correct?

As we have a custom domain name (Questtoastmasters.comj, would the email address then be This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.?

Yes, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. would be correct.

You do not have to overwrite the group members and start over. Just pick the group from the drop down on the custom group tab and the current names in the group should be shown in the pop-up list at the bottom. You can just modify the list of names there.

You can also define custom groups in the different tabs in membership management, but it is harder to modify them there, so the Custom Groups tab is really the way to go.

It works from my personal Gmail account (made myself an other officer)!

Our club has its own Gmail account (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and I tested sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. from there (with just my name/email selected as a person in the Library group so I would be the recipient). I set up "Guest" as an other officer in our Members group with the email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The email bounced with this error message: "You do not have the right permissions to send an e-mail to this e-mail address (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) from This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Be sure your "From" address in your e-mail client is the same as your address in your toastmastersclubs.org member profile.".

What am I missing?

NVM: I had tested the unsubscribe feature and it works great. I put in my email address in the Prospect group and got the email as expected.

Keep in mind that even though you have set up a custom group, the sending rules for who can send to a non-member are still enforced. The sending address must belong to a member who is also marked as an officer in Membership Management. This is checked by the list server code. In fact, it determines if the group is a member only group or a non-member group and changes how it enforces the sending rules based on that.

This is also why groups cannot be mixed ... cannot contain a mixture of "people types" from multiple Membership Management tabs. This is so that the sending rules for the corresponding email addresses can still easily be enforced. If groups could be a mix of members and non-members, it would be unclear who would have the rights to send to such a group.

Guest is an 'other officer' in Membership Management. Took a bit of testing to understand the logic, but it works now.

Very cool that we can do this. Now we just need to have someone check that Gmail account.

I don't understand this. Why would you make a Guest an other officer?

I changed the name to Library Event liaison. Then I sent another email from our This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. account to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (I'm in the Library group with a secondary email address). I got an email in that account with the header "Toastmasters Club 4643 on behalf of Library Event liaison." IT WORKS! Love learning new things.
