Hi, first-time caller here.

On Friday, one of our club members emailed me to say that he couldn't get to our club website. I checked and found that it would not load for me, either. When I tried to reach the site, I got a page labelled dnserrorassis etc. with the message: "Sorry, the page you were looking for does not exist or is not available."

This morning was the first chance I had to check on this. I checked all the settings on our GoDaddy account and spoke with Tech Support there, who confirmed that the site is forwarding properly from them and suggested that I check with freetoasthost to see what's going on.

Can anyone help me determine why the internet has forgotten that we exist? As far as I know, I'm the only club member with admin access to our site who ever uses the admin console, so this is all a bit puzzling.

I appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you for the help, Brian.

It took me a while to identify exactly how to make the change that was needed because I couldn't see anything on the GoDaddy DNS management screen that matched what you described. I did get some help from their tech support staff eventually and made the change. In the meantime, being able to point my club members to the 5677.toastmastersclubs.org address was helpful.

I thought we had this problem fixed, but apparently we didn't.

It looks like the tech support person I worked with skipped making the fix that Brian described this way:

www.toastmastersplus.org . 3599 IN CNAME toastmastersplus.org

I can't easily see where this change needs to be made because the DNS management page at GoDaddy doesn't show where the 3599 entry would go under CNAME. The one line (of 10 that we have under CNAME) where I think this change would go is labelled www and the current entry in that line is the symbol @. Beyond that, it's just not clear to me how to make the correction that Brian described.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting through to GoDaddy today and our site has now been working improperly for a week. I'd like to get this fixed but I feel like there's some magic handshake that I don't know how to do to translate between FTH and GoDaddy.

Can anyone help me with a little explicit direction?

Thanks.

Thanks, I made this change.

I'm left with a couple of questions, though, as there is still part of this that I don't follow.

What was the meaning of including this line in the reply from Monday: "www.toastmastersplus.org . 3599 IN CNAME toastmastersplus.org" ? It looks to me like an instruction to make a change, just like the instruction that followed it, so it seemed to me that maybe it was because I had not followed this instruction on Monday that the dns records were still in error. Apparently that's not the case?

On Monday, I followed the instruction to change the A entry from "forwarding" to "50.63.202.17" but today the direction was to change that same line, which I did. But why was it necessary to change it to a different IP address today, when we made the directed change on Monday?

I don't mind being called stupid in public, if that's what is warranted. But I did read the FTH documentation carefully and it said only that I should follow my registrar's instructions on setting up the DNS record. That wasn't sufficient for me because the GoDaddy documentation is nonexistant so I was stuck between a rock and a hard place here. It's pretty frustrating, because I'm the most tech-savvy person in our club, and I'm sure plenty of other clubs have similarly low levels of knowledge in this area.

What I think Brian meant was that the following lines were problematic:

www.toastmastersplus.org . 3599 IN CNAME toastmastersplus.org.
toastmastersplus.org. 599 IN A 50.63.202.17

Generally we do not recommend using CNAMEs.
The IP address in the second line is wrong.
