Hi,

One of our members is having some trouble logging in over the past few weeks. He is unable to sign in, and it seems as though our TM site randomly forgets his credentials. When he tries to reset his password, the link in the reset password email generates an error message (see image below) and he remains locked out of his account.

Any idea why this would be?

Our club is Alpha Beta Toastmasters, #2666972

The email links are valid for 1 use only. Once the person sets the password they should never use the link again.

They will require a new link if they forget their password again.

Make sure they have their browser cookies set correctly using the information in the docs.

The problem is that the password reset link doesn't work on the first use. Every time I get a new password reset email, the link is broken and generates the error message from the earlier screen shot.
I have cookies enabled on my web browser.

Copy and paste the text of the link into your browser, do not click on the link.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your prompt reply. When I copy the 'reset password' link into the browser, I get the same result.

Do you belong to more than one club? Try logging out of all club websites you have access to, and close your browser before clicking the link. I suggest you force a new link (password request), as the original one might have expired by now.

Hi Pam,
I've already closed my browser, reset my link in an incognito window, copied and pasted my link, and requested a password reset link several times.
The password reset links are always broken.
This isn't the first time this has happened. Last time we had to delete my account and remake it.
Thanks,
Jason

You don't have to delete your account.
Do not use incognito window, they prevent cookies.

Clear your browser cache and cookies for the site.

Hi Brian,
I have cleared the cache and cookies for the site, the issue persists.
Please advise on what I can do to help further diagnose the problem.
Thanks,
Jason

May I ask which browser and version you are using?

I am using Opera v58.0.3135.127

I am now able to log in to my account, negating the need to reset my password. But now that I'm logged in, all the role option buttons are just text that says "Agenda Locked to Members".

To better explain my issues: A few weeks ago, I was suddenly unable to login to my toastmastersclubs.org account despite not changing my credentials. So I've been trying to reset my password, but that didn't work. But now my original credentials are working, but when I login, my account doesn't have the ability to participate in the online agendas.

If you are seeing the message that the agenda is locked, then you are looking at agendas that have already occurred. Are there any agendas for the future?

Future agendas have been made, everything looks good now.
I'm not sure what just happened, but thanks for your help!

Opera is just repackaged Chrome these days... They use the same browser rendering engine internals. FTH should work fine with anything that is essentially the same as Chrome.

Heck, even Microsoft is now abandoning its Edge rendering engine and moving it to use the same one as Chrome.

Chrome is taking over the world. ;)

Ok, so here the question that everyone should be asking but isn't...

What email agent do you use??? (Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

Since the links are in an email and are clicked from inside an email, the email agent matters as much as what browser you are using. Different email agents treat links in emails differently. When the link is clicked, it goes directly to our server, which then loads the website... Browser is only involved at the tail end of the sequence.

Hi Steve,
I use the Gmail web client in my browser. If you have any other diagnostic ideas I can do to get more info, let me know.
Thanks,
Jason

I also use Gmail.

I am not able to reproduce the issue, but I use Chrome as my browser (a difference). However, you can predictably reproduce it, correct? (That may be important.)

What we will need to do is to dig down into your computer config a bit to look for any likely culprits and then try to *exactly* match each step you take when the issue arises, including what you have open in other browser tabs.

So....

1. Your computer config... What anti-virus/firewall software do you use, if any? What Gmail plug-ins are you using? What privacy settings / protection are you using in Gmail and in Opera? I am also interested in your Opera cookie settings...

2. Do you see this when you are only using one browser tab, or when you have multiple tabs open? If multiple, what other tabs are open? Are you already logged in as the admin in a different tab?

3. When the issue arises, does the screen switch immediately from the email to the website with the dialog showing the error? (what are the actual exact steps)

Hi Steve,
1. windows defender/firewall. No gmail plugins, default privacy and cookie settings.
2. Both multiple tabs and single tabs
3. The issue no longer arises, it seems to have gone away. I'm now able to change passwords as expected.

Thanks!
Jason

One thing I noticed is that the password reset link automatically logs me into my account. Meaning anyone with just the link can login to my account (ie. they don't need to know my username).
I think it's pretty standard for password resets to force you to login after you reset your password as an added security step. I'm not sure how big a deal this actually is, but thought it merited mention.
