Hi,

A prospect attempted to submit a "Contact Us" form and received the following email (pasted below). The prospect knows an existing member so reported the issue to the existing member who forwarded the email to me. Attached to that email was a .txt file, which I've attached here. It appears the attachment is what is normally sent to our VP Membership.

Do you know what the problem is?

Renee

You can receive email from them if you add their address to your club whitelist. However, I would be curious as to why another club blacklisted them. ;)

Hi Steve -- Thank you for the explanation that another club blacklisted this person. As a current member of our club personally knows this person, I also wonder why another club blacklisted the person.. Is there a way to find out which club blacklisted the person, so that if it was a misunderstanding, it could be resolved? If that information is confidential, would you be able to tell the person who was blacklisted, which club blacklisted the person?

Thanks,
Renee

Sorry, we will not divulge which club blacklisted the person. You will need to either add their email address to your club whitelist (in Email & Contact Forms) or disable the use of the Crowd-Sourced Blacklist feature.

Keep in mind that I have done everything I could think of in the past with the blacklisting functionality to ensure that no one gets accidently blacklisted--it must be a conscious decision to add them. It could be that they actually were blacklisted from a misunderstanding, but not likely it was by accident. Someone would have clicked the "Is this SPAM?" link in an email which goes to a confirmation page which they have to click a button on or they would have had to explicitly add this person to their club black list.

I have one more clarifying question. If I add an email address to our White List, am I understanding correctly that this person's email would be able to send emails to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., as though the person were a member? If that is true, is there a way to allow the person who was blacklisted by a different club, to submit the Contact Form to our club?

Well they could sent to that also.

You certainly do not need to tell them they can send to the other lists.

Hi Steve -- Thank you for that confirmation. I really like the feature that allows only existing members to send to all members (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

My personal suggestion would be to allow me to place an email in a 'grey list' (using a middle-of-the-road color between black and white lists) that would allow that person to submit a Contact Us form to our club, but not to the email addresses that are limited to existing members.

My fix will be to ask this person to email our VP Membership email address, instead of submitting the Contact Us form.

I've recently been raving about the FTH team and how much I appreciate all that you and the team do for all of us! Again, Thank you!

Renee

Keep in mind that this an example of the trade-off that you are implicitly agreeing to by using the Crowd-Sourced Blacklist feature. Yes, you are very likely getting more protection from getting spammed, but by essentially allowing other clubs to determine whose emails should be blocked & not sent to your club, you are kind of crossing your fingers that some other club using FreeToastHost has not blocked an email address that you actually want to receive email from.

I am not knocking the feature (I created it), but it is important to understand the trade-off.

If you were to just shut off the Crowd-Sourced Blacklist feature, you would not need to white list this person's email address, but your club could get more spam, meaning that you would likely have to actually manage your club black list more actively.

Well, there are always going to be "edge cases"... I think this is probably one of those situations. The existing functionality works fine for ~90% of clubs and scenarios... I am not inclined to want to add functionality to handle each and every edge case. Going down that rabbit hole only leads to feature glut and makes the system unnecessarily complicated to use.

Bottom Line: If the crowd-sourced blacklist functionality is leading to situations like this that you do not like, then disable that feature and manage your club black list through the other existing means. (like the "Is this SPAM?" links or just editing the list.)

Thank you again, Steve. I am happy with the Crowd-Sourced Blacklist feature and thrilled with the features you've added over time. I'm sticking with the the Crowd-Sourced Blacklist and dealing with the "edge cases" whenever they occur.

Thank you again for the powerful and user friendly FTH website!
