Hi!

We're trying to include images in the "Send basic email" feature via "Membership Management" and it seems when we use server-side images (either pre-hosted or uploaded) they won't display (at least in the one Gmail I have access to).

I've isolated using off-site image providers (e.g. Cat as a Service: cataas.com/cat/cute/says/just%20testing) and the image loads as expected while any of the FTH-hosted images do not.

Have I misconfigured something?

Respectfully,
Chris

We would need to see the image references in the underlying HTML for the emails. Generally speaking, you need to use the image uploader in the editor image tool in order to ensure that the images are in the folder that is allocated for user-provided images for your club.

The other thing is that in some cases Gmail will omit images as a security measure.

Hi Steve!

Absolutely understood, below is the underlying code from one of the test emails. I did try to use both the stock images available from the "server" and uploaded an image as well.
<p>First, please pardon our intrusion into your inbox. At some point you were associated with Orange Park Toastmasters in Orange Park/Fleming Island, Florida, and that&#39;s how we&#39;ve got your email. We don&#39;t want to intrude, so you may safely unsubscribe by following the link at the very bottom of this message. No hard feelings and no questions asked; maybe you&#39;ve moved out of town, or perhaps you&#39;re moving through Pathways in a new club &ndash; that&#39;s OK: Thank you for having been part of our history, and know you are welcome to return at any time.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" src="https://orangeparktoastmasters.org/imageuploads/ti/ac-378.jpg?_=1631044490" style="width: 401px; height: 267px;" /></p>

<p>On the other hand, if you&#39;ve been waiting for a signal to return to Toastmasters, we&#39;re here and ready. We meet both in-person and remotely via Zoom (simultaneously) every Monday evening at 7pm. Click here for directions and meeting info (link w tracking).</p>

<p>We&#39;ve got several new members, including a few who meet with us remotely from various parts of the world, and we would be excited to have you aboard again to share in the growth of our little group.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" src="https://orangeparktoastmasters.org/imageuploads/ti/ac-210.jpg?_=1631044490" style="width: 401px; height: 267px;" /></p>

<p>Did you know that Orange Park Toastmasters is one of the longest-serving Toastmasters Clubs in the Jacksonville Metro Area? We have more than <strong>70 years of collective public-speaking experience</strong> and have r<strong>eceived over 60 awards</strong> bestowed on the club. Come help us help you complete your public speaking and leadership journey.</p>

Ok, the image references look ok.

Take a look at the following: support.google.com/mail/answer/145919?hl...E.Platform%3DDesktop

Brian may also have some additional thoughts...

I took a look at the display images setting in Gmail and it's already set to 'always display', thank you for that idea, I hadn't considered it.

In my inbox from the displayed email, there is a Google referral link visible when I pull the image link from the context menu:
https://ci6.googleusercontent.com/proxy/Pxbf3kFVFE7kWxINuajk5oSeI3EkiYM41kaXgrPpzyvT9eS3XeLKd-4ltYdmvxUv9MRkgFrvJ2g9P8YcybisxDwmdJU4Bit6rq6mEAQz95KNZ_mjEvHEHYKomXWJ=s0-d-e1-ft#https://orangeparktoastmasters.org/imageuploads/ti/ac-378.jpg?_=1631044490

It seems the direct link works and not the google CDN referral link. Interesting that Google may be blocking the content from loading.

They likely do it as a security measure. There have been some creative uses of image elements in the past for doing some sneaky things in email... I suspect that Google is blocking against that.

See, the following for example:

The only really consistently reliable way to include images in email is to convert them to inline Base 64 data. See the following for example: elmah.io/tools/base64-image-encoder/ This means that essentially there is no reference to an external server, and all images in the email are essentially "self-contained" data within the email.

I have considered adding an email tool to do this for emails sent from the FTH websites, but it is a very technical thing that I am not sure how many people would really understand.

I can totally do this.

Why not make it an advanced selection and let the server handle it on the way out? It doesn't have to be entirely user-facing.

Apparently, there is some updated guidance on this... Please take a look at the following:

mailtrap.io/blog/embedding-images-in-htm...e-the-rules-changed/

What are considered good practices for HTML email are often changing.
