Arranging items in the Download lists 12 years 7 months ago #2060

I created my list of files using the virtual folders (discussed elsewhere.) I also had a few files that I wanted to remain ourside of folders so they were visible and accessible right away. When I did this the files were intermixed with the folders.

To get around this, any files that are not within a folder, I add and * and space before them. This sorts these entries before any alphabetical virtual folder name so they appear at the top of the list.

One could also use other characters like the underscore, any character that sorts before the alphabetic characters. You would even use different characters to group like items together.

Just a tip I used, and thought I woud share it since it worked out so well for me.

Thanks Bill. I will have to keep this tip in mind when I set my downloads up.

Good tip. I hadn't thought about using special characters. One thing I did to keep folders and individual files separate is label folders beginning with a capital letter and label files beginning with a lower case letter. That way they do not intersperse in the list.

Ok, so just like FTH 1.0 and LINUX/UNIX systems, file names are case sensitive in FTH 2.0. Has anybody checked whether blanks in file names are scrunched out too? Whenever I uploaded files to FTH 1.0 I always had to copy the "uploaded" version of the file name from the "success" message so that I could paste it into links. Otherwise I was bound to generate 404's or "Picture not found "X"'s".

I don't use spaces in file names so I can't answer that; however, I do use dash "-" which FTH2 changes to "_" underbar. I'm not sure why, but it hasn't been a problem.

Bill, I have been using spaces in the description for downloads.

Unlike FTH1 which displayed both the actual file name and name we chose to describe the file, FTH2 only shows the Descriptive name we assign, which is initially set to the file name (with underscores), but is easily changed.

I'm not sure whether FTH 2 adds underscores when uploading files, I haven't monitored this to see what it does.
