After a number of discussions about the best approach to completing translations of the FreeToastHost system text, we have decided that a crowd-sourced approach is very likely the best approach for us to use, given the fact that we have limited resources, no budget to spend on professional translation, and the need to coordinate the effort amongst many different people well into the future.

A crowd-sourced approach will allow Toastmasters members / FTH users to act as amateur translators while allowing for appropriate coordination of the effort via an online translation management platform. In addition, if we find that we can get professional translation in the future, then using an online platform should allow for that, as well.

We have reviewed several online translation management platforms, and we have settled on using the OneSky platform: www.oneskyapp.com/

The FreeToastHost translation project can be found here: freetoasthost.oneskyapp.com/collaboration/project/32586

Here are what we feel are the compelling benefits of the OneSky platform:

1. It is free for use by non-professional translators.

2. It has a very modern, easy to use user interface.

3. It allows for multiple translation projects grouped together.

4. If fully supports a collaborative approach to translation--it even has its own built-in messaging system.

5. It recognizes website-specific elements of the text to be translated. For example, it recognizes HTML tags and template placeholders ("variables") in the text to be translated and tries to maintain them.

6. It supports several mechanisms of providing context for the translations, including allowing for screen capture images to be attached to phrases to be translated.

7. It supports voting and approval mechanisms for the translations as a QC measure.

8. It supports translation memory... basically, a way to save prior translations for future use.

Yes you are right that oneskyapp is a good platform for translation. But we can use "wordbee" as an alternate...

Hi Steve,

I started translating the snippets from English to French. I didn't see much activity on the translation front beside mine. Is oneskyapp still the platform of choice for translation?

Thanx
Jacques

As an interpreter, linguist and translator, Crowdsourced translation sounds to me like a recipe for disaster, yet at the same time it seems like in our modern age it just may be possible with the right tools . . . and the right participants.
Shall check back later and shall keep my eye on this. Maybe i will join Jacques, above, in translating a few "snippets." :)
