DNS settings for custom domains

There are too many DNS registrars to make it possible to give specific instructions for all of them.

Instead, given below are the settings needed for a club to be able to use a custom domain. You can then use them in your own registrar’s dashboard.

Here is a  hypothetical Toastmasters club that wants to use the domain name "exampletoastmasters.com" for its club website.

The essential configuration items are:

A (IPv4) records

A exampletoastmasters.com 50.19.253.65
A www. exampletoastmasters.com 50.19.253.65
A mail.exampletoastmasters.com 50.19.253.65

MX (mail) record

MX 10 mail.exampletoastmasters.com

For your own club, replace “exampletoastmasters.com” with your club’s website address.

Notes:

  • You don’t need to use any specific name servers (NS). You can use your hosting company's name servers, or any other publicly-available ones.
  • Make sure that you don't have your hosting company's mailserver listed as an MX option. This is a fairly common mistake which causes email delivery problems.

Once you've set everything up and saved, you need to wait for the changes to propagate. This is the new settings being broadcast to all the name servers on the internet. It's often said that you may need to wait up to 72 hours, but in practice, most will pick up the new name very quickly. You can use sites such as dnschecker.org or whatsmydns.net to check what's happening. If you see no green ticks on the maps after, say, 15-20 minutes, it's likely something is wrong and you'll need to go back and fix it.

Therefore, it is a BAD IDEA to change your DNS settings shortly before a meeting or special event. Things may get a little chaotic for a while, with some people not yet picking up the new address. Wait until a day or two after the meeting. Also, let members know what's happening.

FreeToastHost support can’t help with DNS configuration problems. If you run into difficulties setting things up, ask for help from the technical support people at your registrar. You're paying them; therefore you're entitled to it.
