We have a custom page on our website called upcoming_roles.html. Whenever we try to go to it this morning, the site takes us back to the main home page. We've had members report this problem before. Any idea what is happening? My guess is that it will fix itself, but this is a page we use a lot and it causes our members grief when it is unavailable.

My gut tells me it has something to do with how the website recognizes if the user is logged in or not because these are member-only pages. I'm not sure how the site it built, but maybe there is a problem with a cookie or cache?

Your log-in is good for 24 hours of use only--your login cookie will expire after 24 hrs unless the system renews it as you use the system. (This is by design, as keeping everyone logged in all the time has the effect of increasing the amount of information being sent from server which can degrade overall system performance.)

So, if you try to access the page after 24 hours of non-use, you will get directed to the home page.

It has been suggested to show a log-in pop-up in this case (24 hrs of non-use), and that is something I may well implement in the future as a way to lessen any confusion.

All that makes sense. In the case of my problem, this is happening immediately after login. It's not after a period of inactivity. The button on the left-hand side still shows the member's name, but the link just goes back to the homepage instead of the custom page. The behavior is not consistent between browsers, devices, etc. Something strange (and probably difficult to track down) is happening.

Which browser are you seeing this on? Have you checked your cookie settings to ensure that the system can set a browser cookie? Those settings do not carry across browsers... have to set them for each one.

I happen to be in Chrome, but I have at least one other user who has reported a problem and don't know what she is using. I'm guessing we have others that simply haven't reported the problem. It is hit and miss. My browser can accept cookies.

Steve, this continues to be a problem for our club. I even went as far as creating a second custom page, and we get the same results. On some browsers and some computers it works, and on others it does not. Something is going on. This page is critical to our club operations and is a big problem for us. I'm happy to show someone the problem if a screen share/conf call is in order. I promise you the problem is real, and I have a lot of tech experience.

Just give me a specific set of steps using your website to reproduce the issue.. I can log in as you, if need be. Give me all the specifics, browser, which pages, etc. to reproduce the issue.

Tell me what you are seeing vs what you expect to be seeing.

As someone who has worked in tech support for many years, I think you will save yourself a lot of time by seeing this on my computer. Trust me in saying that you will chase your tail in reproducing this. I have a screen share program that we can use if that helps.

All you need to do is log in as me and then click on the "upcoming roles" menu item. On some browsers the page loads, and on others you are redirected to the home page.

Since you cannot seem to provide me any additional useful information in this forum to look into this, I am going to turn away from this thread...

Hopefully, someone else can better work with you to help resolve your issue...

I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. My only intent was to help you.

What else do you need from me? I'll do whatever I can to provide this. I greatly appreciate your support and this issue is critically impacting the ability of our club to organize our weekly meetings.

As I mentioned in my previous response, here is what I am doing when I get the error:

Step 1: Log into the club website.
Step 2: Click on the Upcoming Roles link from the menu.

I expect this to bring up the custom page that we have created. What I am seeing is the home page.

Not offended... I am just not getting anywhere helpful.

I have used the information that you have provided and not seeing the same results.

The only think I can think of is that your cookies are not set up correctly. There is a doc for that.

I have reviewed the cookies doc. That doesn't appear to be the problem.

I've had multiple members experience this issue, so I'm confident it has nothing to do with a single user or computer. I have deleted the custom page and created a new page. I have seen the page load and then "break". I have seen the same page work on some computers and not others.

What is the next step to troubleshoot?

1) Yes. www.earlybirdtoastmasterskc.org/UpcomingRoles.html

2) Logging into www.earlybirdtoastmasterskc.org and getting the problem. I just tested 1928.toastmastersclubs.org, and the page loads correctly.

Seems like maybe we had a breakthrough! Somehow the problem is introduced by the URL alias? Hmmm...what next?

Brian: I believe there is a different cookie file set for each URL form for his website?
Brian: I think his DNS settings are not quite right, also... can you confirm? (I do not see an A record for mail.)

Lawrence: Also, you should avoid using a specific URL form in links back to your website... Look at the link at the top of the page of interest... very specific, it will not work right if you do not log in w/ the www earlybirdoastmasterskc.org form. (The link to the agenda.html... .just make the link href agenda.html for best functionality)

Just reviewed cookies yet again. Everything appears as the instructions suggest. See screenshots. I even deleted the cookie data. Then tested again. New cookie data was saved. Problem still persists.

For what it is worth, the problem is now happening the 1928.toastmastersclubs.org/ as well.

And one more thought to help you. We have other custom web pages on our site, and this problem has never happened on other pages. Only this page. That's why I even deleted the page and recreated it.

My theory is that something in the HTML on the page is causing the problem, but that is as far as I can speculate.

Some suggestions (clutching at straws)

1 click "reload website from server" at the bottom of your page

2 "Bounce" your cookie settings - i.e. disallow cookies, save, then allow them again and save (that has helped in the past).

3 If that doesn't do anything, try removing the link at the top (temporarily) and see if the issue persists - that might give us a clue.

Thank you Pam.

I did suggest one to reload the site from server. No change. Still had the problem with the custom page.

I then disabled cookies and deleted them from my cache. I got a message when I attempted to log in that cookies were disabled and the login didn't succeed. I then re-enabled cookies. No change. Still had the problem with the custom page.

I then took everything off the page and just put in the word "test" on the page. No change. Still had the problem with the custom page.

Something strange is definitely going on. If this was a big problem, then lots more people would be reporting it. Surely there are lots of clubs with custom web pages. I really need help resolving this because this page is how we communicate upcoming roles to members. Without it, our members can't sign up for meeting roles. We started this page in July, and only one person reported a problem. I assumed she was the problem. Then others reported problems in August, and then I had the exact same problem. So this is widespread amongst our club. I'm very tech savvy and want to help you help me. I'm happy to video conference you in with my software to show you what I'm seeing. Maybe that will give you an idea?
