I have just started to flesh out the new site.
In importing the members rosta from TI, I eventually got the sense of what was required in the CSV. However when I tried to save the CSV info I inserted, the error came up ... "either Email or Phone has spaces etc." .... very annoying not getting specific error info... and no numbers on the lines? .
I did the delete Email address workaround I saw .... this worked, but now no Email?

Any help gratefully received .....

Here is the info on importing members using the quick-add panel: support.toastmastersclubs.org/doc/item/i...asters-international

Error lines are usually highlighted (pale red). Remove spaces or replace with hyphens (probably in phone numbers).
The email addresses should be struck-through. A message will go to each member to approve the addition to the website. I suggest you let them know to expect that and accept.

Amy thanks .... That is the support info page I followed to the letter! [grin!]
WE cannot see any 'pale red' highlighting. Very small font and lots of red underlining.
I did a trial entering a single name Email and phone, yes it was struck through. And yes, I received a confirmation that email was sent to him.
However, I am still non plussed with using 'quick add' and a CSV list. The error comes up .... no matter what I do [there are no spaces] the error remains when I click 'save'. As I have said, the error goes away when we delete email details.

So I close ... next visit all that I have entered has disappeared.
Has the list simply not been accepted? Also, I have entered one entry manually as I have said above, but I cannot see any way of entering the next entry? Please help ... very frustrated and wasting a lot of time guessing. [we are extremely computer literate]

Please upload the text file you are trying to import into the members area, into your clubs members only file area and let us know the name so we can use your information to import into the clubs membership.

Ah! You mentioned text file .... we were using an Excel CSV file. We simply copied and pasted from that ... then made sure there was only one space between each part of each entry.

Let me convert to a text file and see what happens.
If I am not back in five minutes I am abed! 2am here...... Dec

1) a .csv is a text file formatted with comma separated values

2) Member downloads is where you see the files that you upload using the admin console file manager and you flag the file as members only or public.

Ok, so for us to help you, we need to be able to inspect your .csv file containing the data without you risking exposing your members contact information to the general public. (a huge privacy risk)

The general public can see any and all things that you post in these forums, including things you attach to a forum post, so we do *not* want you to attach your csv file to a message here because of the obvious privacy risk.

However, if you can upload the csv file using the File Manager in the admin console of your website, and then set the file as locked (look for the pad lock button), that would make the file available in the Members Only File Download page of your website. We can access that area while it prevents the general public from doing so. Then we can inspect the file for any potential issues that are causing problems.

Can't access members' download cos I can't list myself as a member.

I have just put my details in at he 'single entry' page .... I put another member in and he awaits confirmation [struck out] ... I could not figure how to insert another member in that page ... just figured it was the 'NEW' tiny row that needed to be filled in ... I feel like I am Beta testing [grin!]

Will await the email to confirm membership.

You really need to read the documentation on this site.
Go to admin console file manager to upload the file.

Looking at the file it is not a csv - comma separated values file, there are NO commas between the columns.
What commas that are there are after the name and not after the designation.

You don't have that many members to add it would be faster just to copy and paste into the single add than to fix the file.

Ok, so I dug into this a bit... I had to review how the text information is parsed by the Quick Add tab (split up into the parts).

1. Brian: Both you and I missed that the expected data format is not actually CSV--it needs to be strictly spaces between the name, email, and phone #. In fact, a true CSV file may not parse correctly. It has always been that way. (I never changed the parser that much.) Note that it does indicate in the Quick Add tab what the expected format is. I could add support for true CSV, but that will take some investigation.

2. makehits: The reason you were having issues is that five of the lines have 2 phone numbers in them and that is not supported. For example: look at the lines for Nigel and Sophie. Those have 2 phone numbers in them... not supported. The code will treat the one of the two phone numbers as an email address that looks invalid.

The way the parsing works is that it splits up each line by where the spaces occur. (*not* commas) It then essentially works backwards from the end. The email address and the phone number, if it exists, are presumed not to have spaces in them. Thus, the code just examines the last two non-space pieces of text, and looks at whether one has an @ sign in it to find the email address. If the other of the two has at least 3 digits in a row in it, it is presumed to be a phone number. The email address and phone number (if exists) are stripped off of the original line of text, and whatever is left is presumed to be the name. Since the name is whatever is the "leftovers", it can have spaces, commas, etc. and it will not matter. As long as the code can correctly find the email address and any phone number in each line, the Quick Add will work.
