System not accepting cookies

Hello!

A couple of users are having problems initially creating their password for this site. They received the initial member authentication email, but when they follow the link and create their passwords, it comes back saying that their machines are not accepting cookies. I've read through some older forms posts as well as the FAQ about this particular issue. After trying everything I've read, nothing seems to be working. I have verified that our network has no rules in place that blocks cookies. I tried temporarily disabling our anti-virus software on their machines and nothing worked either.

I have also tried:
  • Tried IE8, 9, and 11. Made sure to add the website to allow cookies as well as overriding automatic cookie handling in Advanced Privacy Settings.
  • Using both Firefox and Google Chrome. Configured both to allow cookies which didn't work.
  • Compatibility mode made everything worse, which was expected.

Does anyone else have any ideas on what could be tried?

Thanks!

There is nothing that stops you from creating a password on behalf of a member if you go through the process as if you are them. However, if there is genuinely an issue with setting cookies, then they will likely have problems using the system.

The way the password setting pop-up works is that the system tries to log them in as a member *before* showing the pop-up. It can do this because they click a link from an email to them, which ensures that the correct person gets in, and the log-in status does not depend on whether a password is actually set or not. (The random text "session key" to get in is actually in the link itself.) If the system determines that they are *not* logged in when the password setting pop-up is called for, then the presumption is that there is an issue with their cookies. However, there is no actual check for cookies... it is a presumed problem. If you can set the password for them, and they are able to log in with that password without an issue, than they may be able to use the system, albeit with limited functionality if there really is a cookie issue. I have put some workarounds in place in the past for people that have cookie issues, but I do not guarantee the workarounds will work in all cases, since the workarounds are more focused on admin logins.
