New member obtaining password

I have added a new club member (Arun Nethala) to our web site using the Membership Management module. When he went to sign in for the first time he naturally didn't have a password. Starting to enter his info, his name did get filled in, and he continued on without a password but never got the email that was supposed to be sent to him with further instructions. Once he told me that, I tested the process myself, using his name. The box came up saying that an email was sent to him, but again, he never got it. The email address I added for him was arun.nethala@gmail.com, which I have used to email him and from which I have received his emails to me.

I thought perhaps the reason for this might be that our treasurer has not yet signed him up on the TI national web site... maybe FTH does a cross-check there? But then again, if that were the case, I'd expect some sort of error message along the way as I was adding him as a member (which never occurred).

So, what's the problem here? Am I doing something wrong?
