I want to create a custom group of former members who moved out of the area (so we can remember who they were, and so we have their info in case they ever come back, but I don't want to bother them with invitations to special events since they are no longer local).

I went to my group of former members and selected those I want in this custom group. They seem to still show up as former members and it doesn't appear they have been moved. Is there a way I can easily see my custom group and not have them also be part of a different group? Do I need to remove them from the other group? I was afraid that if I removed them, I might remove them from the database instead of just one group.

I haven't done much with the custom groups myself, but my understanding is that always remain part of the underlying group that they were created from (i.e. members, former-members, guests etc). Therefore, they can't be excluded when you send to the entire underlying group.

I can think of two suggestions to deal with the situation.

1. Make the rest of the underlying group into another custom group and use that to send notices about local events.

2. If you're not using one of the other basic groups, such as friends, move your custom-group people there.

If you remove them entirely from a group, as distinct from moving them to another, then you would indeed remove them from the database altogether.

Thanks for the reply.
I am using all of the groups that come with the website so I don't have any that are unused.
I'll try your idea.
