The friendly version instructions are given in the New Member Welcome Message. You can customise that to include instructions on how to sign up for agenda roles or anything else pertinent to your club site. How about including something in your new member kit, saying that they should receive an email telling them how to log in, and to let the site admin know if they have trouble or don't get the email.

In our club new members get an email from the secretary confirming their membership and advising them to look out for the welcome to the website message from the site admin. Of course that relies on the site admin sending the welcome message out. If not, as long as the new member can find the website, all he needs to do is press the member login button and the instructions are provided
