ActiveMember auto-bouncing off to 'Former Member List'

Hello,
A first-timer on this forum. I have a member who keeps getting bounced off to the 'Former Member' list and we found out only lately when he wasn't receiving members@ emails.
I fixed it a few weeks but the message crept up yesterday again, stating that he indicated he's a former member, when he clearly didn't receive any such notification.
How can I avoid this in the future?
Any help is appreciated.

If the member clicks the links on the bottom of the emails that says he is no longer a member the account is moved to former members.
