This concerns the online agenda. When one of our members selects a particular role for each meeting, he/she has to select all the buttons for that role down through the agenda. Is this a programming glitch or intentional? My understanding, and how this has worked previously, is once a member selects a role, his or her name should appear by all instances of that role, thereby "locking it out" from other members' being able to sign up later in that agenda.

Your club has not setup the roles correctly. Please read the documentation, play attention to the use of the * in repeated and grouped roles

The system software does not have a way to automatically know when roles that are worded differently actually refer to the same role. (There is no built in natural language processing for that.) This is why you must essentially "tell the software" that different agenda items actually refer to the same role using the "key wording" feature, which is what Brian is mentioning above.
