Trailing space on email causes a problem?

I entered a contact whose email address ended in .cc to the guests database. She did not receive the opt in email. After a bit of digging and a couple of tries I discovered that my cut and paste of her email had included a trailing space, or possibly a tab - some spacing non visible character. When I removed it the email went through. I don’t know if this occurs with the better known.com or .org.
Have you seen this before?

Email addresses do not have spaces anywhere, including trailing.
Please becareful when entering information.

Since trailing spaces, tabs and similar are not legal in emails, but can easily be inadvertently entered why doesn’t the system trim them before entering into the database. It is a simple regular expression.
