Linking Agenda Items?

I was asked if agenda items can be linked together.  So if you have an agenda item called Timer that is available for a member to sign up for, they will also automatically be assigned the agenda role Timer's Report.  I didn't think it was possible, but then a friend showed me an older agenda template that did that behavior. We couldn't figure out how, and in trying to recreate it, the agenda stopped doing that.
