restricting member access to certain fields/options
7 years 3 months ago
Is it possible to restrict a specific member's access to certain fields in an agenda?
I'm currently a Division Director, and I've been asked if I could spearhead an effort to create a "speaker's exchange" program. What this would do is give members of large clubs - who often have trouble getting as many speaking opportunities they would like - a chance to be a guest speaker at a much-smaller club - one that often has trouble filling all the speaking slots they have available.
What I'm thinking of doing is having the smaller clubs that are interested in this program create a 'fake' member ID in their FTH data base. This ID would be the same for all participating clubs, and they would all use the same password. (We'd have a list of participating clubs posted on the Division/District web page.) The clubs would also add a "speaker exchange" role to their meeting agendas (a lot like how many clubs already have a 'backup speaker' role) that interested speakers would use to request a speaking slot. It would be up to the club's VPE to confirm that the potential speaker will have an opportunity to speak.
Having a 'published' user name and password is understandably going to give a lot of clubs pause, so I'm wondering if there's any way that specific 'member' name can be given restricted access to the club's web site - i.e. they will be able to access the agenda and select the "speaker exchange" role, but nothing else.

The minute you publish a password, you will likely run into issues. What if someone decides to change the password to something only they know? What if someone uses this as an opportunity to spam members of a club?
The only way what are wanting to do works is if you do not publish the password and you have club liaisons (VPEs?) to handle the agenda updates.
A member login is a member login... there is no "special login" or restrictions.

All clubs can create an member guest that their VPE would use to allow a guest speaker on the agenda. The club VPE is in charge of the agenda and they are the ones who should control what happens on it.
Having fake members and published passwords just opens FTH up to all sorts of abuse and we would have to stop it immediately.

Everyone's pretty much confirming what I expected. I'm trying/hoping to come up with an 'easy and convenient' mechanism for people interested in this program to use. I'm afraid that if someone has to contact every interested club directly to see if there's an opportunity on a particular day, they're not going to do so - and the project would be doomed from the start. I'm in the very early stages of thinking about this, though, so I'm still brainstorming.

Use a third party mail list and use the FTH club VPE email address as the club contact.
There are many out there even gmail can be setup,
