I followed the example of using a * before and after a description on a past agenda and it indeed worked as you describe. Thank you.

I have an idea for improvement: The documentation on the Add/Edit Agenda Item where a role is being created should show the * instead of " as it does now (Enter the name of the role or agenda item. Some examples, "Toastmaster","Sgt. at Arms Opens Meeting","1 Minute to Complete Evaluation Forms" (no quotes).), wouldn't you agree?

The purpose of the asterisks is just to force the code to treat multiple incidences of a role collectively rather than individually. However, the asterisks are not needed if you only have one occurrence of a role.

Many simple agendas do not list multiple occurrences of roles, so the asterisks are not needed then.

It is not a "black and white" use case, so there is not a "black and white" way of documenting it. It really should be considered a more advanced use case for more advanced agendas.
