Can we get temp site to try new looks before switching over?

HI.  We want to make changes but i fear breaking it in the process.  Basically do a lot of experimentation before cutting over.  Ideally make all our changes on the new site and then promote it when we are ready.  Is this possible?  i tried creating new but it said we already had a site.
