Unable to add new members in member management

I've been trying all day to enter 3 new members.  it doesn't work for any of them.  The usual pop up comes up and the screen stays as it was with the person I added still at the top.  I have done this many times but not today.  Assistance please.  Thanks.

I have checked.  None of them are already in the system.

Check that they aren't already in Guests or Former Members.

If they are, you can move them from their current place to the active members list.

After MANY, MANY tries i was able to enter one person but he went into a different category, not Members.  I was able to easily move him.  After MANY more tries the only thing that worked was using Quick Add.     This message popped up and the site is VERY, VERY slow, even after rebooting by computer.  I am not having any other computer issues.
